Salam everybody

I am not altogether surprised that a simple question
about the “assermentation” exam-a rather innocent
query-should give rise to a heated debate on the
trade’s current affairs. Ever since I came back to
Morocco, I have been literally assailed with a barrage
of strong feelings and serious allegations targeting
sororities involved in the decision making process
directly affecting the trade. As a Johnny-come-lately,
I would find it quite a risky business to come up with
any pronouncement on the subject. Having said that, I
would expect a professional association to serve the
interests of the profession above anything else.
Failing, it ceases to have any raison d’etre. I am
confident, though, that fellow translators will never
sell their beautiful souls to Mammon in exchange for a
handful of dollars. Of course nobody can deny us the
right to fend for ourselves and feather our nests if
we can, but we translators remain, basically, men of
letters  endowed with this magnificent power to spurn
and transcend the earthly pursuits of moneygrubbers.
