THE SOFT SHOOT 8/12/06 - ELEVENTH HOUR DIVA SEARCH
THOUGHTS
By Don J.
[Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this column are
those of Don Jeffrey Krouskop and do not necessarily
reflect those of the owner/moderator(s) of this
group.]
Well, we don't have a confirmed winner yet, but
chances are the 2006 WWE Diva Search is, for all
intents and purposes, over. Monday will send another
lady packing, setting up a final round of voting and
the Final Selection show on Wednesday evening. There
are few opportunities left for the remaining four
finalists to convince the fans why they are the right
choice.
As it has been every year, the Diva Search was a mixed
bag. The girls were all very attractive this year, and
there wasn't one lady among the top eight about which
you could honestly say, "She's gone! when the first
pics of the finalists hit the net. Some were prettier,
some had bigger breasts, some were taller, but they
were all gorgeous and, more importantly, marketable on
the surface. Once they began the competition in
earnest, however, the flaws in both the competitors
and the contest began to show.
Despite the beauty of the finalists, this year's
search proved an ugly one. When Amy was eliminated
early on, it was all tears and hugs from the group. By
the time Rebecca left two weeks later, it seemed like
it was all the Miz could do to keep the girls from
tearing each other apart. Jen accused J.T. of copying
her. J.T. and Rebecca cheated and nearly came to blows
in Musical Chairs. This past Friday, Layla flung a
beer can right at Jen after nearly tripping on it
during the Talent Contest, leading to a semi-serious
catfight. The closer the final elimination gets, the
higher tensions have run in this competition. The
fireworks of the past two years involving the
seemingly bitchy Carmella and the foul-mouthed Amy
Weber were nothing compared to the ever-mounting
animosity in this group, despite all of their early
solidarity.
Once again, the fans didn't help matters. I'll be the
first to admit that Diva Search segments often run
long, and are often less-than-riveting entertainment.
The girls, thrown in front of a crowd and asked to
improvise, frequently stumble and flounder, and the
same WWE fans who will buy the eventual winner's DVDs,
magazines and posters for years to come turn into
old-school ECW fans the instant an interview runs
three seconds over or a contestant looks lost as to
what to say or do next. This year, the detractors were
out in force, booing and hissing as though this Diva
Search contest were a political rally for the party
they blame for all the nation's problems. Small wonder
at least one girl every year appears to crack under
the pressure, going from smiling hopeful to venomous
witch in a matter of weeks. I suppose in a tough
business like pro wrestling, that kind of trial by
fire is a good thing for an aspiring superstar, but
all of the booing doesn't make the segments themselves
any more palatable, or the job of the contestants any
easier.
There were several pivotal turns this year. Here are
my choices for the most important, and the reason why
I feel they were defining moments.
-Jen starts off strong with a good introduction and
the gimmick of carrying or wearing something
embroidered with her name. At this point, it honestly
looked like only one of these girls had the savvy and
charisma to win the contest. Inspired by Ashley's
phone number gambit last year, Miss England gambled
that displaying her name on her scantily-clad body
would help remind voters who to pick. It worked... at
least, for a while.
-Layla dominates Diva Boot Camp. Being a Diva means
more than having big breasts and posing in a bikini.
To make it as a Diva, you'll have to get physical from
time to time. While many of the competitors were
stumbling and struggling, the former Miami Heat dancer
blew through Sgt. Slaughter's obstacle course like it
wasn't there. This might prove to be the most
important moment of all by the time we get a winner
Wednesday night.
-J.T. does the splits on the ring ropes but loses the
Dance Off to Milena. Crowd reaction was so tepid
during this entire contest that it's arguable how
clear-cut Milena's victory was. What isn't in dispute
is the fact that J.T. went from being an also-ran to a
momentary contender with her strong showing here. It
may also be true that not winning may have set in
motion her shift in attitude.
-Erica shows no rhythm at all in the Dance Off. This
stunning beauty stayed alive so long purely on her
sweet demeanor and her ample cleavage, as she
displayed none of the athletic prowess to make it in
the squared circle in any of the more physical
challenges. She may have survived two cuts after this,
but Miss Chevillar sealed her fate here with her
awkward, "white guy" dance moves.
-J.T. cheats to win Musical Chairs. She and Rebecca
both kept grabbing the remaining chair throughout
their turns around it, but J.T. was halfway seated
before the music stopped. This led to...
-Rebecca picks up the chair and threatens to hit J.T.
with it. I actually thought this display of attitude
might help Miss DiPietro, a gorgeous lady who was kind
of lost in the shuffle up to that point. Instead, it
apparently got her voted off by fans. Whether they
found the action phony or just the work of a sore
loser, they wasted no time getting rid of Rebecca.
That unexpected turn momentarily changed the face of
the contest.
-Layla gets creamy. During the pie-in-the-face promos
designed to test each applicant's ability to react to
the unexpected, Layla didn't miss a beat when she got
creamed, smearing the dessert all over her body and
carrying on with her promo unfazed. Ask Christy Hemme
- any hot girl can eat a pie, but a hot girl eager to
rub it all over her nearly naked flesh will win out
everytime with the male fans.
-J.T. misses her cue. She looked like she was waiting
to get hit with the pie, but she really just didn't
realize she was supposed to be talking. Her
"deer-in-the-headlights" performance here pretty much
doomed her chances of winning. To make certain,
however, she followed it with...
-J.T. sounds drunk and invites the crowd to boo her.
Diss The Diva was supposed to be about why the other
girls shouldn't win. Miss Tinney, slurring her speech
and rambling, decided instead to show her contempt for
the audience. Whether she was tired of the weekly
boo-fests (and who could blame her?), embarassed at
her poor showing in the pie promo, mad at Jen and the
other girls for turning on her, or genuinely
intoxicated, her rant was a self-destructive mess
which will likely guarantee that she doesn't even
reach the Final three.
-Milena loses momentum. This exotic beauty was quietly
building a strong fan following coming into the final
week of the competition. She looks athletic and seemed
genuinely nice in her promos. However, after spending
weeks telling us how she's the only finalist tough
enough to handle the rigors of a wrestling career, her
clumsy Judo demonstration in the Talent Contest did
little to back up her boasts. First, she tried to get
the crowd going by disrobing, but she'd already been
upstaged on this front by the more curvaceous, amply
endowed Layla, who ripped off her own outfit during a
lively dance number. Then she showed her "fighting
prowess" with a single, sloppily-executed hip toss
before launching into a speech about how she'll earn
the fans' respect if they pick her. A torrent of very
telling "boos" was all the crowd offered for her
efforts, indicating that her dark horse bid for the
contract might be in serious trouble.
-Jen and J.T. also blow the talent contest; Layla
blows them all away. I may be proven wrong, but I
believe this won it for Miss El. While everyone else
floundered miserably and tried to fill 60 seconds,
Layla burnt up the canvas with her sizzling hot dance
routine and showed some real attitude toward her
fellow competitors. When asked who they thought should
win, the crowd gave Layla a bigger pop than any girl
has gotten in any Diva Search segment yet.
Of course, the most important moment is still to come
- the final selection. Only then, when the dust has
settled and a winner is crowned, will we know for sure
just how these moments affected the outcome. As noted,
I believe Layla will emerge the victor, using the same
combination of wild personality, fantastic figure and
confident sex appeal that won the title for Christy
Hemme and Ashley Massaro before her. I'll talk more
about what winning the contest really means to both
the new Diva and the WWE in my next SOFT SHOOT column.
In the meantime, how can next year's Diva Search
comeptition be better? I'm sure every WWE fan has a
few ideas, and I'm certainly no exception. Here are my
suggestions:
-More athletic & wrestling-related contests. Races,
obstacle courses, and other tests of physical
strength, agility and endurance tend to get a better
response from the crowds than Musical Chairs and
Pie-Eating contests. We all know these girls are hot.
What we want to find out is, are they more than just
"eye candy".
-To that end, how about a brief training match with a
seasoned vet, to determine if they have any in-ring
potential? Sure, they'll be raw and everything will
have to be kept simple and safe. But how many sloppy
matches will we all be spared by finding out before a
contract is signed who has a shot at learning to
wrestle and who doesn't? Further, it seems likely one
or more of the girls will decide after taking a solid
bump that maybe they don't want it as bad as they
thought, and that reluctance to return to the ring
will be obvious to the voters.
-More short, individual segments spread throughout the
broadcasts and fewer lengthy segments with all 8
finalists on stage or in the ring. These longer
segments often bore the audience and seem to lead to
more cattiness between the ladies. We learn far more
about the contestants one-on-one than we do when they
are in a line-up in front of 15,000 fans.
-Drop the "contest theme song and recurring host"
approach and let each girl work with the creative
department to make her own entrance music. Let
different superstars host different segments, ala
TOUGH ENOUGH, so we can see how the ladies interact
with different established personalities.
-More background info about the finalists, including a
video package shown on the air showcasing their
accomplishments, personalities, etc. By the time we
meet the Divas live on RAW, we should know a lot more
about them than just what they look like and that they
made the cut.
-If you really want to spice things up, confine the
search to women who have wrestled on the independent
circuit before. Make them go through the whole process
of contests, promos, fan votes, etc., but only allow
indie wrestlers to apply. This might mean fewer
Playboy Playmates and swimsuit models (although many
indie ladies, including NWA Women's Champ Christie
Ricci, have no trouble filling out a bikini!), but it
will greatly increase the chances that the eventual
winner can move right into the hunt for the Women's
title.
Personally, I like the annual Diva Search contest no
matter what form it takes. I'll tell you why very
soon!

MAT MAIDENS REPORT 8/12/06 - IMPACT! & SMACKDOWN
By Don J.
[Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this column are
those of Don Jeffrey Krouskop and do not necessarily
reflect those of the owner/moderator(s) of this
group.]
August isn't your average month for wrestling, with
SUMMERSLAM and such, so this won't be your average,
run-of-the-mill Mat Maidens column. You see, the
second half of this week has been somewhat less than
thrilling in the women's wrestling department, and
your usually chipper columnist has a few strong words
to lay down. I could write a SOFT SHOOT piece on some
of these points, but next week looks promising, so
I'll just use the lack of material to recap as an
opportunity to interject a bit more opinion than
usual.
I'm not sure how to feel about TNA. HARD JUSTICE looks
like the best PPV since the company began its run on
SPIKE TV, with a great card and a big Knockouts match
between Gail Kim and Sirelda. While including a
one-on-one ladies contest in such a promising event is
good for the future of women's wrestling, failing to
mention the match or even show either of the
competitors on the IMPACT! immediately prior to the
event is a bit of a slap in the face. With all due
respect to Traci Brooks, Jackie Gayda and Christy
Hemme, no Knockout has worked harder for TNA than Gail
Kim over the last year or so. Why wasn't she allowed
to make at least a token appearance on TV Thursday
night, to set the stage for her match? Similarly,
Sirelda hasn't been on TV in weeks - a fact
undoubtedly making some fans wonder just who the heck
Gail is scheduled to fight on Sunday. The woman shows
up a few times, doesn't say a word, isn't even given a
name on the air until what ends up being her final TV
appearance in a month. With the Knockouts DVD coming
soon, I expected more airtime for the ladies. Instead,
Traci's wrestling in the indies, Jackie's on maternity
leave, Christy's at Sturgis, and Gail and Sirelda are
M.I.A.? Whatever edge TNA has over the WWE in terms of
wrestling, Dixie Carter and the Jarretts could sure
learn a lot from Vince McMahon when it comes to
promotion and marketing. You can't shake a stick
without hitting a WWE Diva, even if you've never seen
a wrestling show in your life!
At least So Cal Val was there to blow us a kiss in
IMPACT's opening moments. Too bad the Naturals were
also left out of Thursday's action, meaning we could
not see more of their rather "leggy" new entrance.
Still, Miss Wyndham was the lone high note (and a
lovely note, to be sure!) for Knockouts fans this
week.
Speaking of legs, the best pair in the business once
again escorted the "Teacher's Pets" to the ring for
their non-title match against the Tag Team champs,
Brian Kendrick & Paul London. Though they cheated to
win, K.C. James & Idol Stephens looked almost as
impressive inside the squared circle as Michelle
McCool did standing outside it. I've given up fighting
it... Miss McCool is flat-out smokin' hot!
Ashley and Kristal briefly had words backstage as they
vied for the attention of the judge of the evening's
Diva Search Talent contest, none other than BEVERLY
HILLS 90210 "hunk" Luke Perry. I know what you're
thinking... a Diva Search Talent Contest judged by
Luke Perry? Ugh! Sadly, you'd be right.
Each finalist had one full minute to show off her
unique skill, while the Miz and Perry did their best
to sell the excitement.
My girl Jen tried to impress the crowd by throwing a
few kicks at Josh, a grinning local who volunteered to
play punching bag for the ladies. She followed this
display of "talent" with a tribute to Stone Cold Steve
Austin, catching a couple of beers thrown into the
ring and drenching herself in booze. The beers got a
vaguely positive response, but the crowd was rightly
bored by the overall routine, which ended in plenty of
time for her to launch into another "I'm here to kick
ass! Who wants some?" rant. I've been leading the
fight to get Miss England the contract and the
quarter-mil, but I have to admit she flubbed this
event - probably the girls' last chance to win over
the fans before next week's finals - big time. Though
hot, she cannot lay claim to either the best body or
the strongest personality of the group, so her failure
to offer any real unique ability in the ring probably
guaranteed that she will not win the Search.
Milena apparently learned nothing from watching Jen,
as she ditched her karate garb to do one awkward judo
toss on Josh before starting her own "I'll work hard
for you!" speech. The crowd booed her mercilessly.
Personally, I've always thought Milena was just a
little less attractive (which is, admittedly, like
saying "This diamond doesn't shine quite as much as
those others do!") than some of the other finalists
and did not really distinguish herself in any of the
events. She won the Dance Off by a narrow margin, but
otherwise one wonders if she's in the Final Four by
virtue of some of the previously eliminated girls
doing even less to win votes. She claims to be the
most physical of the contestants, but her performance
tonight didn't show it.
Ah, J.T. ... What can I say? This girl has one
SERIOUSLY hot body and, early on, showed a lot of
concentration and effort. In the end, she accepted the
Carmella/Amy Weber role and got an attitude about the
whole process, appearing to alternate from apathy to
anger depending on what she was asked to do. Her
"talent", as it were, involved a bit of poetry
designed to diss the other finalists. Delivering it
with all of the rhythm of one of Christian's old "mock
Cena" raps, her voice was nearly drowned out by the
boos of the crowd. Obviously, they found the clumsily
written, sour grapes rhyme unappetizing. She even
stumbled over her words when Jen took offense and
started mocking her. It was an ugly cap to a long,
mostly anticlimactic segment.
The hands-down winner of the Talent Contest was the
only lady who displayed any real talent, Layla El.
Since the second week, when she won the Diva Boot Camp
handily, I've been saying that Layla was the biggest
threat to Jen for the contract and the cash. The
reason is her combination of bubbly personality,
voluptuous figure and physical dexterity, all honed
during her stint as a dancer for the NBA's Miami Heat.
When she flubs something, she has shown from day one
an unerring ability to recover, like the moment
tonight when she nearly tripped on one of Jen's
abandoned beer cans but went right on with her
high-energy dance routine, unfazed. Last week she
didn't bat an eyelash when she was hit with a pie
during her spirited "Pick me!" pitch, smearing cream
all over her body and continuing right on with what
she was saying. Following her Talent Search
performance, she started a mock wrestling match with
the owner of the offending beer can, the two ladies
having a sexy little catfight before being split up by
the Miz. Basically, Layla has done what Ashley Massaro
and Christy Hemme did before her - show an ability to
play to the crowd, get the most out of her strengths
and downplay her weaknesses, and be sexy and vivacious
as all hell even when she comes up short in a contest.
Layla is going to win the Diva Search competition,
barring a gaff on RAW or an eleventh hour effort by
fans of one of the other ladies. Her detractors will
cry "Fix!", but she has the goods, plain and simple.
She's funny, smart, sassy, built like the proverbial
brick... well, you know (in other words, she's built
like today's most popular wrestling sex symbols
Candice Michelle, Trish Stratus, Melina Perez & Traci
Brooks - thick and busty), and she's always able to
turn up her considerable stage presence an extra notch
for the cameras. She may pronounce it "Divar", but she
has shown that she understands just what the word
means better than any of the other contestants in this
year's Search.
When it comes right down to it, I believe all of the
eight finalists (and many of the applicants who didn't
make that cut) could find a niche in the WWE. Some
"losers" have already been signed, and others will get
their chance very soon. But, as much as I feel like
I'm betraying Jen when I admit it, Layla strikes me as
the one Diva Search applicant with the best chance to
use her sex appeal and athleticism to become a
well-rounded wrestling (and that, friends, is the
operative word) Diva. As a champion of women's
wrestling, I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't admit that
picking a girl who can both look hot and one day
genuinely earn a shot at the women's title is better
for the sport than just picking one who knows how to
shake her rump and make thinly-veiled innuendo. All
four remaining competitors say they can bring the pain
inside the ropes, but Miss El is the only one who has
shown me thus far that she is physical enough to back
up her boasts. Call me a bandwagoner or a traitor if
you like, but when Uncle Vince asks us to make the
final cut on Monday, I'm going to cast my ballot for
the woman I honestly think will be best for the WWE
and nationally-televised women's wrestling. I'd say
it's a safe bet I'll be voting for someone I haven't
voted for before.
HARD JUSTICE looms! Talk to you soon!
A Bit Ashamed But Converted Nonetheless,
Don J.

MAT MAIDENS REPORT - RAW & ECW 8/9/06
It's been quite a week so far, wouldn't you say? RAW
opened with what should have been a Women's Title
Match between Trish Stratus and Mickie James, but
ended up being a Mixed Tag Team Match with Edge & Lita
Vs. Trish & Carlito. The Rated R Champ, tired of
taking a backseat to others, stopped the Women's match
cold and sent Mickie to the back, after which he
berated Trish for being on the cover of the new WWE
magazine (in one HOT pic!). Lita then called Trish a
"no-talent slut" and a fracas broke out, leading to
the tag contest. Backstage before the match, Trish
showed her hatred of Lita in a venomous rant, then
planted a kiss on Carlito to let him know just how she
feels about him! The match itself was a good contest,
with Edge inadvertently spearing Trish right out of
her boots and Lita getting the easy pin. If the rumors
are true and these two ladies are preparing to leave
the WWE, both showed their commitment to going out
with a bang, taking some major bumps on this night.
Torrie & Candice got in on some of the backstage
action, too, flirting with Shane McMahon just moments
before he was attacked by Shawn Michaels. It's unclear
whether they were just trying to distract Shane O'Mac
on HBK's behalf or they were actually coming on to
him. Either way, they both looked fantastic.
Maria was missing from RAW for the second straight
week. Where are you, Miss Kanellis? We miss you!
Viscera took a second out of his match against John
Cena to say something to Lilian Garcia. It's likely
the poor ring announcer is headed for more trouble
from the World's Largest Love Machine.
Erica was sent packing from the Diva Search ranks,
leaving just four finalists for next week's final
elimination and Final Selection special. Before anyone
could get too teary-eyed over her departure, the Miz
gave each remaining lady 20 seconds to play "Diss the
Diva", where they were to explain why they should win
and the others should get the boot. Jen reminded us
that she is our "sex kitten" and asked if the Memphis
fans were ready to "tame this kitty", an offer that
got an enthusiatic response from the crowd. Layla
finished her pitch by pointing to her posterior and
saying the other girls could "kiss this". Milena
claimed she was the only one who could "kick ass" in
the ring. Crowd reaction to both ladies was mixed. JT
sounded intoxicated and a bit angry, telling the fans
to go ahead and boo to "keep me going, baby!" I'm more
convinced than ever that Jen's combination of looks
and personality will carry her through to the end,
though Layla still presents a big challenge. When the
girls find out who is the winner next Wednesday,
expect JT to already be back at home, watching on
television. Since cheating to win the Musical Chairs
contest a few weeks back, she acts like she doesn't
even care anymore, and the fans are unlikely to let
that slide.
Melina stole another RAW by mimicking her world-famous
ring entrance on top of the announce table! If this
woman gets any hotter, they'll have start censoring
her on Mondays the way they did on SMACKDOWN! She did
get cooled off a little when she and boyfriend Johnny
Nitro witnessed Kane defeat Shelton Benjamin to become
the #1 Contender for the Intercontinental
Championship. Can even the gorgeous Miss Perez
distract the Big Red Machine enough to protect her
man's belt at SUMMERSLAM?
One major complaint about RAW - we're less than two
weeks away from the 'SLAM and there's still no Women's
Title match on the card. I hope they're paying you
well, Mickie, because they're not giving you adequate
opportunities to show off your in-ring skills. TNA
doesn't even have a women's division, and they've got
a Knockouts match scheduled for Sunday's HARD JUSTICE
PPV! Hopefully the coming changes (the return of Beth
Phoenix, the likely departures of Trish & Lita, the
naming of a Diva Search winner and the signing of
several of the other finalists, the possible fallout
of Nitro's IC title run) will lead to more TV time for
the ladies' champ and her gold.
ECW's Kelly Kelly finally managed to be at ringside
for a Mike Knox match without affecting the outcome or
getting herself whacked across either set of lovely
cheeks. Looking as stunning as ever, she cheered her
man on as he beat up Tommy Dreamer, with the help of
Heyman's stooges, and the Sandman, with the help of
Test. It will be interesting to see if they allow
Kelly to become a full-fledged heel alongside her guy,
or if her desire to show off her body will lead her to
resist his controlling ways.
Before tonight, even a happy fan like me was starting
to get tired of ECW VS. WWE matches. Since before this
year's ONE NIGHT STAND, barely a week has passed that
someone from one brand hasn't shown up on the other's
show and started a fight, be it for pride, gold, or
even matters of "jurisdiction". Though I personally
feel that the so-called "fans" in New York who bought
tickets just so they could boo Batista & Big Show last
week aren't particularly bright (Did they really NOT
realize that the string of Show Vs. WWE headliners was
all for the purpose of setting up the reigning ECW
Champs SUMMERSLAM feud with Sabu and RVD? Were they
REALLY unaware that you can't run a televised
wrestling promotion for over a month with your
reigning world champion suspended for possession of
illegal drugs? I guess that's what beer does to minors
and those who still haven't grasped the whole "it's
scripted" concept.), I'll admit that the match in
question was rather slow-paced, and the
interpromotional contests in general were getting old.
I say "were", because tonight I came to the conclusion
that my life as a women's wrestling fan will not be
complete until I see RAW's shapely Melina go
one-on-one with ECW's buxom Ariel. For the second time
in three weeks, this incredibly sexy Vixen has stolen
the spotlight from her buddy Kevin Thorn with her
ringside writhing and sultry rope antics. Tonight she
let the vampire into the ring by hanging upside down
like a bat from the ropes and escorted him out with a
repeat of her "bareback" sprawl on the middle rope. In
between there was plenty of biting and climbing all
over Thorn, even as the big man handily dispatched Al
Snow. One fan in the crowd booed audibly during this
(?), but most of us who understand that A)new
wrestlers need time and a few jobbed matches to get
established and B)well-endowed, extremely flexible
vampire chicks are hot likely enjoyed the show.
(Okay, I know some of the things I said in that last
paragraph were a bit harsh, but sometimes ECW fans get
under my skin. I like sound technical wrestling and
guys getting put through tables as much as the next
guy. I also know that ECW has always had its fair
share of "sports entertainment" trappings, from goofy
jobbers to hot women to dead-end storylines to
promoters making themselves part of the angle, since
long before Vincent Kennedy McMahon was signing the
paychecks. Time to get over yourselves a bit, kids.
Hating Uncle Vince because your friends or the drunk
guys in the next row do doesn't make you a "smart
mark". It makes you exactly the kind of thing ECW is
supposed to be rebelling against - a bandwagon-jumping
conformist. There's room in the new ECW for matches
that don't involve barbed wire and steel chairs - just
as there always was.)
Anyway, now that I've ruffled some feathers, I'll say
that this week's show was much better than last
week's. The Vixens are playing an active part in the
proceedings without becoming too much of a
distraction, and the wrestling continues to take
center stage. If they're not going to have the women
wrestle, it's wise to showcase them at ringside as
often as possible. The Kelly's Expose segments
detracted from the storylines and used up valuable
airtime. Having Kelly and Ariel on the apron, rooting
for their respective boyfriends makes them part of
angle and keeps the focus where it belongs - on the
ring.
TNA's coming up fast, with a PPV and a Gail Kim match
right around the corner!
The Guy Least Likely To Get Invited to NY or Philly
Anytime Soon,
Don J.
